Over the past few months, several team members from Uber Operations have been working on the Pandemic Flu Grant (pilot project) with the Florida Department of Health, Texas Department of State Health Services (including Mexico) and the CDC.

The main objective of the Grant is to achieve electronic data exchange interoperability between states, including sharing influenza surveillance laboratory test orders and results. The goal is to be better equipped to prevent or delay the spread of influenza and other illnesses, as well as dramatically improve potential surge capacities for situations such as H1N1(Swine) flu.

The recent deaths with the H1N1(Swine) flu outbreak show how important projects like the one above are and how technology can facilitate the surveillance and response.

For the first time in more than 40 years, since the end of the terrifying polio epidemics, federal, state and local governments started assessing and rebuilding their almost nonexistent public health infrastructures. Today, almost every business, school and government agency has a pandemic flu plan, yet the infrastructure to address a true pandemic doesn’t exist.
